Sodaplay (down :)

We are very sorry to say Sodaplay is down at the moment. Its pretty amazing it lasted as long as it did on such an aged and creaky platform.

We need to totally rebuild the back end server stuff to store and share the amazing creations produced by the community. We also need to work on the front end. As Sodaconstructor was created in the 1990’s (prehistoric in web terms!) it was written in Java which now has many security issues. We have prototyped proof of concept apps in iOS (for iPhone and iPad) and in HTML5 so Sodaconstructor models can run in web browsers.

Unfortunately all this work requires time and money we just don’t have. We attempted a Kickstarter campaign earlier this year which sadly failed. We do hope to get it up and running again. We need the funds to do so. Please get in contact if you’d like to help.

Sodaplay is Soda’s suite of creative, educational tools, including:

  • Sodaconstructor A model-building tool with physics at its core.
  • Sodarace Uses genetic algorithms to pit man against machine.
  • Moovl An application fpr kids to create simple animations.
  • Newtoon Create small, physics-based microgames.

Each of these applications exemplifies our belief in creative play. There are no set goals, instead, the user makes their own as they experiment and create. Creative play is rewarding - users discover more as they explore. Their creations are enjoyed and built on by others in turn; a creative snowball effect that sustains the growing sodaplay community.

With the help of funding from Futurelab Soda developed Newtoon to advanced prototype level.

The sound of sodaconstructor reverberated around the 2001 Sonar festival in Barcelona, where crowds could both hear and touch a menagerie of sodaconstructions. Powerful speakers and a large touch sensitive plasma-screen enabled the audience to grab models from the sodazoo and physically throw them around the screen to a cacophony of dynamically generated sound.

Play is central to our philosophy; it fosters an experimental and uninhibited approach to creativity. Our playing created sodaconstructor, an online construction kit for building animated models, winner of the 2001 Interactive Arts BAFTA Award.
