‘Energy’ comprised 45 custom LED panels each 600mm square distributed over a surface of the school’s boiler house chimney, which has a commanding position over the school playground. Each panel contained two independently controllable, energy-related iconographic images designed by Year 8 children and laid out in coloured LEDs.
Soda’s software used data from videos shot by the children as the control mechanism for the LED panels, thus allowing the school to easily change the behaviour of the artwork. The pupils and teachers involved in ‘Energy’ were very proud of their involvement in the production of what became a totemic feature of the school’s landscape.
